Identify if there is a need for change. Be honest in your assessment of the existing condition because the source of the problem must be addressed at its roots. Assessing that change is necessary and committing to making it is the first step.

Do some research to see if your situation is unique. There could be a solution a phone call or mouse click away. Using basic, free tools, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Wikipedia, etc. can yield surprisingly helpful information.

Follow the example of those that have overcome your particular challenge. It can be that simple. There are likely examples of those that have learned from, survived, or overcome challenges similar to yours. Start by looking for them through a mix of research avenues, staying alert and listening.

What resources do you have at hand to help make change possible, implementable, and sustainable? Start fresh if you need to. You may need to distance yourself from your normal influences. This includes advice and cautionary warnings from family, loved ones, friends, and so-called experts that may mean well. They may not always have the full story or share the passion you bring to achieving your specific goal—an underrated ingredient for success. Be sure to harness the skills, intelligence, and ingenuity of those you may have overlooked in your own “backyard.”

Pull together true supporters to help counter any resistance to change. Don’t overlook those within your organization, as they are the first-line ambassadors that represent you. Open your mind and listen closely to what others say and observe what they do. Live in every moment. You will hear something that will help you. When you are trying to change you must make a shift in how you gather and interpret information. Eliminate any know-it-all behavior.

Create a plan with small attainable goals on your way to the ultimate goal. You will need these successes along the way to stay positive, focused, and motivated to keep striving.

Keep your plan moving at a steady pace. Keep in mind that it will be hard to get the ball rolling again if you lose momentum. Do what you can to achieve goals and garner successes, however tiny, as in commandment 7.

Sustainable change doesn’t happen overnight. Remember how long it took to get to the point where you recognized that change was necessary.
10.
It’s never too late to make a change. When you’re clear that change is a must, and you have outlined realistic, attainable steps to achieving your goals, you are likely to make changes that bring about meaningful results. An African proverb says, “When you wake up is your morning.” This simply means there’s no need to agonize over what should have or could have been. However and whenever you have reached the decision that change is needed, go from there.
